Chef Daniel Angerer Defends Cheese Made From Wife’s Breast Milk

Last week, we brought you news about Chef Daniel Angerer’s special cheese made from his wife’s breast milk , and boy did that open a can of worms ! While we expected knee-jerk ‘ EEEWWW ‘ reactions from people, we didn’t really imagine the extent to which people would get up in arms about breast milk cheese – something which in our minds is totally natural, organic, and not gross in the slightest. People got so concerned about the breastmilk cheese issue that apparently the New York Department of Health came to pay Angerer a visit over the weekend . Well you can rest assured that Angerer’s “ My Spouse’s Mommy Milk Cheese ” is not being sold to the public at his restaurant, Klee Brasserie – he confirmed that on the radio today.

Stunning Rooftop Paintings Visible from Satellites

There’s no doubt that Google Earth has given us all a new perspective. Apart from being able to see our own houses from above (weird!), we can even  monitor global deforestation and track migrating animals . And while US Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu would like us all to  paint our rooftops white  - sending excess heat and blinding glares back into space – artist Molly Dilworth is interested in a Google Earth eco-venture that’s a bit more colorful -  vivid rooftop  paintings that can be seen from outer space! Heat-Resistant Algae Could Help Threatened Coral

Warmer ocean temperatures pose a serious threat to corals around the world.  Warmer waters typically kill the brown or green algae that a reef depends on for food, leading to bleaching and death of the reefs, but Penn State scientists have found some algae are not affected by rising temperatures, buying their coral partners some time. Heat-resistant algae have been found in the Andaman Sea in the Indian Ocean as well as in spots in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean.  Scientists aren’t sure if the resilient algae can save corals – the algae may not be able to be imported to coral reefs where it doesn’t naturally occur and there are other things threatening coral, including rising ocean acidification , pollution and bottom-trawling fishing.  Considering all of that, the algae may be just a temporary life-preserver. But some scientists think warmer waters may encourage the growth of these algae, benefitting the reefs they occupy over the long-term.  Continued research will be needed, but this discovery does offer a glimmer of hope for the world’s coral

You’ve probably noticed that you read a lot of stories on Arctic melt , how quickly it’s progressing, opening up shipping lanes and hurriedly moving towards ice-free summers.  But what you don’t read much about is melting of Antarctica’s ice sheets.  If global warming is causing polar ice melt – why don’t we hear about Antarctica?
